Painted Contact Paper Dishwasher Experiment
APRIL 4, 2022
I don’t know why, but this stainless steal dishwasher has GOT TO GO. Wait, yes I do. It’s because I hate stainless steal. Personal preference. I needed to make this eyesore blend in more and had plenty of my Behr Cabinet and Trim enamel left over from repainting my cabinets.
I had seen painted appliances that look great but I know my little ever changing heart and needed something temporary so I started scheming.
I picked up some Con-Tact brand white contact paper and my trusty ol’ Bullseye 123 and got to work.
I smoothed on the contact paper with a wallpaper smoothing tool and then primed the whole sheet. At this point I was a little worried that the seam would be super noticeable but hey- this is what experiments are for.
Once the primer was dry, I did my first coat of Behr Truly Olive which is always a little scary. So it got another two coats with proper dry time in between.
I used my Freeform paintbrush for the first coat and a foam roller for the next two. (Code BAKERBLOOMS for 15% off your own grip free brush.)
At this point, the top was still black and I thought, that’s fine and all but this is an experiment so I better go all in. So out came the gold Rub n Buff.
I did two coats of that and voila. Left it at that.
And oh man, I was not ready. I was NOT READY for this little experiment to hit ONE MILLION views in one day but there it went and out came the trolls from under their bridges and it was a field day. A fun one, sure. But I never knew how much a little olive green paint would trigger people. I never knew what kind of power it wielded. It’s a lot, if you’re wondering. A lot of power. I tried to kindly remind people that this was in my house and that I was NOT sneaking into their houses at midnight to paint all of their cabinets and dishwashers green but it was to no avail.
BUTTTT you can’t win everyone over and this was in the name of DIY science so who cares. I had fun.
Without further ado- the TikTok that broke the green haters hearts:
And spawned the Green Paint Bandit:
(I’ve since done many experiments on the durability of this project and and documented the removal so be sure to check that all out on my Instagram and TikTok)
